We are really looking forward to the Spring Term 2018 in Badgers Class. Our topics this term are 'Winter Wonderland' and 'Dinosaurs'. During the first half term we will be learning all about the Arctic and Antarctic and the season of Winter. This will include learning about the animals that live in the Arctic and Antarctic, freezing and melting and reading and creating our own maps. The topic will be supported through stories such as Lost and Found, 365 Penguins and Penguin Problems . Our role play area will be a Winter Explorer's Den to develop the children's role play skills and we will be producing artwork on both a large and small scale to display in our classroom.
After the half term break in February, we will have our second International Week which will be focusing on Canada. Following this, our topic will change to 'Dinosaurs'. This topic will explore different types of dinosaurs and their habitats, exploring the role of a palaeontologist and learning about where dinosaurs and other creatures come from. We will use information books and other resources to find out more about dinosaurs.
We will be cooking in our kitchen classroom making delicious recipes related to our topics, including winter warmer porridge, seed cakes for the birds, maple syrup cookies and cheesy fossils. For a full list of foods on our cooking menu please refer to our Spring Term Topic Web which is on display in the cloakroom in Badgers Class and has been sent home via your child's bookbag.
We continue to offer opportunities for physical education throughout the week in Reception, making use of our outdoor and indoor space such as the Hall. In the Spring term of Reception children begin formal PE lessons and will need to have their PE kits in school everyday.
Our cooking day is Monday. Please ensure your child has a named container with a lid in school on a Monday so that they can take their tasty treats home! Please note on some occasions the children's cooking is eaten in class with the children as it may not be practical for them to bring their cooking home (e.g. toast).
Learning at Home
Please continue to read with your child at least three times a week and record this in their reading record. Children should be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to segment and blend words when reading new words for the first time.
We have begun to use the Reading Eggs resource. Your child's login details are in their reading record. Please access this with your child to support their reading skills. We would recommend this is done on a weekly basis.
Please speak to Mrs Stevens, Mrs Pigott or Mrs Bennett if you have any questions. We look forward to sharing our work with you as we add comments and photos of our learning in the Badgers Class gallery throughout the Spring Term! Please remember to check Tapestry and our DB page regularly for updates on what your child has been doing. You can also add your own observations onto Tapestry if your child has completed some learning with you at home which you would like to share.
