We are really looking forward to the Summer Term 2018 in Badgers Class. Our topics this term are 'Journeys' and 'The Teddy Bears' Picnic'. During the first half term we will be learning all about the transport, travel and vehicles. This will include learning about all the different ways that people travel to destinations near and far. The topic will be supported through stories such as The Train Ride, The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch and Percy's Bumpy Ride . Our role play area will be a train station followed by an airport to develop the children's role play skills and we will be producing artwork on both a large and small scale to display in our classroom. Our topic will be further enhanced with a trip to SaxonAir at Norwich Airport to learn all about how they work and to see their planes and helicopters.
After the half term break in May, we will have our second International Week which will be focusing on the Caribbean island of St Lucia. Following this, our topic will change to 'The Teddy Bears' Picnic'. This topic will explore the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will be retelling the story and acting it out in lots o different ways. We will also plan a very exciting event - our very own teddy bears' picnic for the Reception children, their teddy bears, their adults and the new Reception children for September. Hopefully you will remember attending this event last year with your child! We will use information books and other resources to find out more about bears and to research healthy recipes for our picnic..
We will be cooking in our kitchen classroom making delicious recipes related to our topics, including pasta salad, lemon drizzle cake, trifle and cheese scones. For a full list of foods on our cooking menu please refer to our Summer Term Topic Web which is on display in the cloakroom in Badgers Class and has been sent home via your child's bookbag.
We continue to offer opportunities for physical education throughout the week in Reception, making use of our outdoor and indoor space such as the Hall. In the Summer term Badgers Class children will have formal PE lessons on Tuesdays and Thursday, however they will still need to have their PE kits in school everyday.
Our cooking day will still be Monday. Please ensure your child has a named container with a lid in school on a Monday so that they can take their tasty treats home! Please note on some occasions the children's cooking is eaten in class with the children as it may not be practical for them to bring their cooking home (e.g. toast). In the second half of the summer term, most of our class cooking will be saved for the Teddy Bears' Picnic event.
Learning at Home
Please continue to read with your child at least three times a week and record this in their reading record. Children should be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to segment and blend words when reading new words for the first time.
We are continuing to use the Reading Eggs resource. Your child's login details are in their reading record. Please access this with your child to support their reading skills. We would recommend this is done on a weekly basis.
Please speak to Mrs Stevens, Mrs Pigott or Mrs Bennett if you have any questions. We look forward to sharing our work with you as we add comments and photos of our learning in the Badgers Class gallery throughout the Summer Term! Please remember to check Tapestry and our DB page regularly for updates on what your child has been doing. You can also add your own observations onto Tapestry if your child has completed some learning with you at home which you would like to share.
