We are really looking forward to the Autumn Term 2017 in Badgers Class. Our topics this term are 'Magical Me' and 'Celebrations'. During the first half term we will be learning all about our bodies, feelings and the things that make each one of us special . This will include learning to read and write our names, learning about and using each one of our 5 senses and naming the different parts of our bodies. The topic will be supported through stories such as The Rainbow Fish, Funnybones, and Titch. Our role play area will be a home corner to develop the children's role play skills and we will be producing artwork on both a large and small scale to display in our classroom.
After the half term break in October, we will have our first International Week which will be focusing on Italy. Following this, our topic will change to 'Celebrations'. This will cover a range of special times celebrated by the children in our class including birthdays, Harvest, Diwali, Bonfire Night and finishing with Christmas. We will learn all about these special times are celebrated and think about the special times that the children have shared with their families at home.
We will be cooking in our kitchen classroom making delicious recipes related to our topics, including scented playdough, toast, gingerbread and smoothies. For a full list of foods on our cooking menu please refer to our Autumn Term Topic Web which is on display in the cloakroom in Badgers Class and has been sent home via your child's bookbag.
We have opportunities for physical education throughout the week in Reception, making use of our outdoor and indoor space such as the Hall. In the first term of Reception children will not have formal PE lessons but will still need to have their PE kits in school in order to access the full range of activities planned.
Our cooking day is Monday. Please ensure your child has a named container with a lid in school on a Monday so that they can take their tasty treats home! Please note on some occasions the children's cooking is eaten in class with the children as it may not be practical for them to bring their cooking home (e.g. toast).
Learning at Home
Please read with your child at least three times a week and record this in their reading record. These will be sent home in children's bookbags on Monday 11th September 2017. Initially in Reception these books will be sharing books for you to read to your child and discuss. Later in the year when we begin our phonics programme children's books will change and become phonics based reading books that the children can begin to decode with support. Children should be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to segment and blend words when reading new words for the first time when reading
In addition, your child will receive a Big Talk question on a Thursday. This will be a question related to the learning we have been doing in class that week . Please could you spend a short amount of time (no more than 5 minutes) discussing the question with your child and asking them about their ideas and views. The Big Talk question will be related to our current topic, for example an Autumn term question might be "What makes you feel proud?"
Please speak to Miss Farrow, Mrs Bennett or Mrs Pigott if you have any questions. We look forward to sharing our work with you as we add comments and photos of our learning in the Badgers Class gallery throughout the Autumn Term! Please remember to check Tapestry and our DB page regularly for updates on what your child has been doing.
